THE ESSENCE OF WOMEN IN MANAGEMENT AND THEIR EMERGING ROLES IN NATIONS -BUILDING IN ABUJA MUNICIPAL AREA COUNCIL OF FCT NIGERIA

This study examined the essence of women in management and their emerging roles in nation-building in Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Federal Capital Territory, Nigeria. The study was motivated by the increasing participation of women in organisational management alongside continuing concerns about gender inequality in decision-making and leadership positions. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. The population comprised women managers, administrators, supervisors, entrepreneurs and other employees within selected public and private organisations in AMAC. A structured questionnaire was used for data collection, while descriptive and inferential statistics were employed for data analysis. Frequencies, percentages, means and standard deviations were used to answer the research questions, while Pearson Product-Moment Correlation and regression analysis were used to test the hypotheses at the 0.05 level of significance. The findings indicated that women participated in management and decision-making to a considerable extent, with a grand mean of 3.66. The findings also revealed that women performed emerging roles in strategic planning, employee supervision, entrepreneurship, mentoring, policy implementation, community mobilisation, innovation, conflict resolution and human-capital development, with a grand mean of 3.86. The first hypothesis revealed a significant positive relationship between women's participation in management and nation-building (r = 0.684, p < 0.05). The second hypothesis showed that women's participation in decision-making significantly influenced organisational and community development (R² = 0.412, p < 0.05). The study concluded that meaningful participation of women in management and decision-making can strengthen organisational effectiveness, community development and nation-building in AMAC.
