The Influence of Leadership Style on Marketing Performance in Organizations: A Case Study of Selected Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in AMAC, Abuja
Abstract
This study examined the influence of leadership style on marketing performance in organizations, with a
particular focus on selected Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Abuja Municipal Area Council
(AMAC), Abuja, Nigeria. Leadership style plays a critical role in shaping employees' motivation, innovation,
customer orientation, and decision-making, all of which contribute to marketing effectiveness and
organizational competitiveness. The study specifically assessed how transformational, transactional, and
democratic leadership styles influence marketing performance indicators such as customer satisfaction, sales
growth, market share, customer retention, and profitability. A descriptive survey research design was
adopted, while primary data were collected through structured questionnaires administered to owners,
managers, and marketing personnel of selected SMEs within AMAC. The collected data were analyzed using
descriptive statistics and inferential statistical techniques to determine the relationship between leadership
styles and marketing performance. The study found that transformational and democratic leadership styles
positively influence marketing performance by encouraging employee commitment, creativity, teamwork, and
customer-focused strategies, whereas excessive reliance on transactional leadership may limit innovation
despite improving operational efficiency. The study concludes that effective leadership is a significant
determinant of marketing success and sustainable business growth among SMEs. It recommends that SME
owners and managers adopt participatory and transformational leadership approaches to enhance employee
productivity, strengthen customer relationships, improve competitive advantage, and achieve long-term
organizational performance.
